As some of you may have seen from the email subscribe pop-up box on my site, I recently created a free guide to help you get started with one of the most crucial aspects of content marketing: building authority.
For those of you who have already downloaded it, thanks! Send me an email and let me know what you think. For those of you who haven’t downloaded it yet, WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?!?
I just wanted to take a quick sec to go over what’s actually inside the guide, why authority is important, and how the guide will help you with your content marketing.
Why Is Authority Important?
I could have made this guide about any number of topics. How to create content, how to market your content, social media, or tons of others. But ultimately, I decided that a guide on how to build your authority was the way to go because in a lot of ways, it’s going to steer the direction of whatever else you do. And in my opinion, you can’t be truly successful with content marketing without building up your authority.
So first, what exactly do I mean by “building authority”? Your authority is your position within your industry. How much people respect, acknowledge, and trust your opinions and advice on topics related to your industry. For instance, Pat Flynn has a lot of authority in the Affiliate Marketing and Online Marketing industries. People follow his blog and podcast because they trust that he’s giving them the best information. And John Lee Dumas is an authority in the podcasting space, because people respect his insights and tips on podcasting.
And you don’t just have to be an individual person like Pat or John in order to be an authority. Apple is an authority in the tech industry. Under Armour is an authority in the sports apparel industry. It’s all about the trust that people have in you or your brand.
The reason authority is important is because people follow authorities in the industries that they’re interested in. I don’t mean just following them on Twitter or Instagram. I’m talking about buying the products they sell and recommend. Pat Flynn recommends Bluehost as a web hosting company, and earned over $400,000 in revenue last year doing it, because people value his recommendations. That’s the power of being an authority.
Being an authority puts more eyes on your content, and gets more people to share the content that you put out because they know, like, and trust you.
